High-Resolution Imaging by Adaptive Optics Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy Reveals Two Morphologically Distinct Types of Retinal Hard Exudates
Histological studies from autopsy specimens have characterized hard exudates as a composition of lipid-laden macrophages or noncellular materials including lipid and proteinaceous substances (hyaline substances). However, the characteristics of hard exudates in living patients have not been examined due to insufficient resolution of existing equipment. In this study, we used adaptive optics sca...
متن کاملModeling the foveal cone mosaic imaged with adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy
To better understand the limitations of high-resolution adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (AOSLO), we describe an imaging model that examines the smallest cone photoreceptors in the fovea of normal human subjects and analyze how different factors contribute to their resolution. The model includes basic optical factors such as wavelength and pupil size, and defines limits caused by s...
متن کاملAdaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy.
We present the first scanning laser ophthalmoscope that uses adaptive optics to measure and correct the high order aberrations of the human eye. Adaptive optics increases both lateral and axial resolution, permitting axial sectioning of retinal tissue in vivo. The instrument is used to visualize photoreceptors, nerve fibers and flow of white blood cells in retinal capillaries.
متن کاملHigh resolution retinal imaging with a compact adaptive optics spectral domain optical coherence tomography system
Adaptive optics (AO) is used to correct ocular aberrations primarily in the cornea, lens, and tear film of every eye. Among other applications, AO allows high lateral resolution images to be acquired with scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO) and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SDOCT) is a highspeed imaging technique that can acquire cross-section...
متن کاملCorrecting for Miniature Eye Movements in High Resolution Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy
The newest generation of confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopes with adaptive optics correction of ocular aberrations provides retinal images of unprecedented resolution, allowing for real-time imaging of photoreceptors in the living human eye. Natural fixational eye movements made by the subject/patient during recording produce distortions that are unique in each frame. Correction...
